possible discrimination in their own practice and to develop
robust approaches to deal with them.
Clients/partners should:
- Be made aware that the service has an equal opportunities
policy;
- Be informed that referral criteria give equal access to all who
come within the remit of the service.
Advocates should:
- Be made aware that the service has an equal opportunities

- Know how equal opportunities policies relate to advocacy.
The co-ordinator/manager should:
- Implement equal opportunities legislation and service policies
and know how they relate to advocacy;
- Ensure that all activities are free from unfair discrimination and
are governed by principles of equal opportunity;
- Ensure that referral criteria give equal access to all who come
within the remit of the service;
- Carry out Equal Opportunities monitoring;
- Develop networks to reach potential clients/partners who may
not ask for advocacy themselves;
- Ensure that initial training highlights the importance of
equal opportunities.
The management committee/service should;
- Know and implement equal opportunities legislation and
service policies;
- Ensure that all activities are free from unfair discrimination and
are governed by principles of equal opportunity.
Demonstrating equality of opportunity

that it always puts the individual first.
Information to clients/partners
- There is a clear equal opportunities statement in initial
information;
- Information is available in accessible locations and formats;
- Information is available in community languages.
Policy and practice
- Recruitment and employment practices are covered by
the equal opportunities policy;
- Referral criteria relates to a clear equal opportunities policy.
Monitoring information
- Equal opportunities monitoring information of clients/partners
is collected;
- Equal opportunities monitoring of clients/partners is
analysed regularly;
- Source of referrals/routes into advocacy are recorded.
